I used to think of myself primarily as a writer. Since early childhood, I've written stories and plays. My first poems were published while I was in high school, at about the same time I started editing the school newspaper.
I have been a freelance writer and editor since 1986, when I edited a newsletter and literary magazine for a writer's group in West Virginia. My work included screening manuscripts, cataloguing authors and replies and proofreading galleys.
After I relocated to the Albany, New York area, I took a job as a newspaper reporter for The Courier, a weekly newspaper based in Chatham, New York, in 1990. I wrote articles, covered local events and board meetings, and took photographs to accompany my articles. As one of only two reporters, I was also responsible for layout and paste-up of three to four pages a week.
I later left my full-time position with the newspaper and began working as a freelance writer. I continued to write for the newspaper, but also began writing materials for local businesses, including press releases, sales letters, and business plans. When I moved to the Pittsburgh area a few years later, I continued working as a freelancer, writing for local publications such as Allegheny Times, .Hampton Magazine, McCandless Magazine, The North Journal Star, and North Hills Monthly Magazine. My work has appeared in national and international magazines, including Renaissance Magazine and Scottish Islands Explorer. My book reviews have appeared in a number of publications, both online and in print.
My first online work was published here on Suite101 in 1997, when I started the topic "Resources for Writers." I went on to manage a group of about 25 writers. In 2000, I was promoted to Senior Managing Editor, overseeing ten managing editors and approximately 150 writers. I have published articles on Helium, Massage101 and several other sites.
As an editor, I have worked for several self-publishers, and have edited manuscripts, marketing plans, and business materials.
