Mining the News for Article Ideas

How to Come up With Endless Ideas for New Articles

Even after you have a few published articles to your credit, you still need to come up with new material every week. So where do you find those ideas?

The best advice for finding article ideas is to pay attention to the world around you. Listen in on conversations at your local coffee shop to find hot topics. Keep a notebook or digital recorder handy so you don’t lose track of those ideas.

Start Locally

One simple way to find ideas is to read the headlines in newspapers and magazines.

Start with your local newspaper. Begin with a few questions:

  • What are the hot topics, repeated week after week?
  • Who are your local news-makers?
  • What’s happening in your town that affects people on a national level?
  • What’s happening in your town that’s unique or unusual?

Jot down as many ideas as possible, and make a practice of doing this every time you read the paper. After just a couple of weeks, you’ll have a plethora of ideas.

Seek a Broader Perspective

Don’t limit yourself to local news. Instead, go to the library and read national newspapers such as USA Today or financial papers like The Wall Street Journal. These newspapers can help you identify trends and topics with broad appeal.

The same holds true for magazines. Browse headlines while waiting in line at the supermarket or discount store. These publications have done a lot of research on the latest trends and the best way to catch a reader’s attention. They are also intended to reach a wide audience, so make sure to target your articles carefully.

Mine the Internet

Internet news sources can provide you with the latest news so you can often come up with ideas to write about for local or regional articles before anyone else. Subscribing to one or two news services can provide you with more ideas than you can ever use, so set a few key phrases to search out the news in a few niche areas.

Other Idea Sources

Press releases sent out by businesses offer news about new products and services. Often, once you get on their mailing list, you will receive every press release, providing you with great ideas for writing articles. You can also search the Internet for releases using terms such as “press release websites” or “new press releases.”

Talk Shows on radio or television cover many hot topics. Due to their nature, they also provide you with a variety of viewpoints for each topic.

Local news programs can also give you ideas for topics that can be applied on a national or regional level. Since you’ll only get a minute or so on each subject, you’ll need to do further research to get your facts straight.

Once you start keeping your eyes open and paying attention to all the little details around you, you will never have to worry about running out of ideas for new articles.
